Lightroom Tip O' the Week

Before we get to the goodies this week, I wanted to take a moment to thank Mark Sirota, Bob DiNatale, Jao van de Lagemaat, Gene McCullagh, and Mike Aaland for a great set of posts this month.

With 2009 in full swing it's good to see such great dialog taking place between all the wonderful readers and authors on IL.

Ok, now that the Lovefest is over let's focus on today's tips at hand ...

For this week’s tips we’re going to look at how we batch keyboard shortcuts together in our high volume workflow.

When we first start a job, there are some top-level adjustments we perform often. We don’t always commit these changes but they’re always a first line of attack with a new job. It’s worth remembering these shortcut as well as the order they are utilized:

  • Auto White Balance - command + shift + u (mac) ctrl + shift + u (pc)
  • Auto Tone - command + u (mac) ctrl + u (pc)
  • Convert to Grayscale - v (mac or pc)

If we like what we see from any of these adjustments, or other adjustments we’ve done (exposure, crop, etc.), we’ll use these shortcuts, or the Previous button as we move on to the next image.

  • Copy RAW Adjustments - command + shift + c (mac) ctrl + shift + c (pc)
  • Paste RAW Adjustments - command + shift + v (mac) ctrl + shift + v (pc)

For a quick draft slideshow of our work:

  • Quick Slideshow - command + return (mac) ctrl + return (pc)

Continually going to the mouse to perform adjustments starts to take its toll on your flow and your focus. We’ve found we don’t even have to look at the keyboard to perform these shortcuts once you start to use them often.

What are your favorite shortcut combinations?

… sound off in the comments.

An even faster way to apply the settings from the previous image is to simply hit:

command + ALT + v (mac) ctrl + ALT + v (pc)

This way there is no need to copy AND paste, rather you simply apply the previous settings in one click.

Thanks for the tip Sean ... good stuff!

When deciding on keepers I completely depend on the number key shortcuts for color marking... and wish there was a "10" key for purple.

And I agree, "v" is also a huge one for me.

Great tips Brandon! Thanks!

I like PUX. Press P for a PICK, U for UNFLAG, and X for REJECT. I usually PUX my way through on my first pass to narrow down what I'll devote my attention to.

A quick mastery of the keyboard shortcuts to lightroom greatly improved my efficiencies with large-scale batching of newly imported images. I wonder if the investment in RPG keys is worthwhile - or if Adobe will respond to the same level of keyboard shortcuts in a new revision?
