Lightroom 2.3 Release Candidate is Available

Lightroom 2.3 Release Candidate is now available at Adobe Labs! Go to http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Lightroom_2.3 for more information and to download the files. Support has been added for the Nikon D3X and the Olympus E-30.

Also added is language support for Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Korean, Spanish, and Swedish. Adobe reports that the RC fixes the following bugs:

  • In the Windows 64-bit version of Lightroom an sFTP upload process could cause Lightroom to crash.
  • Slideshows could return to the first image randomly during playback.
  • A memory leak could cause Lightroom to crash while attempting to process files with local adjustments.
  • Canon EOS 5D Mk II sRAW files could process with artifacts in Lightroom 2.2.
  • Lightroom 2.2 could cause disc burning to fail for Windows customers.

In parallel, Adobe has released new betas for Camera Raw 5.3 and the DNG Converter 5.3. These are available at http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_5.3.

Adobe's Release Candidates tend to be extremely stable so go ahead and try them out. LR 2.3 can co-exist with LR 2.2 on a Mac. PC users, however, need to be warned that 2.3 will replace 2.2 on their systems.

Morning Gene! Do you think 2.3 is a version we will have to pay for if we have 2.2 already? - Matt.

Hi Matt!

No. Typically the "dot" releases (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.) are not paid upgrades. That's usually reserved for full releases (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc.). Adobe has done paid upgrades in the past on dot releases (Pagemaker 6.5, Creative Suite 3.5) but these have been major feature enhancements. I don't see that happening in the Lightroom cycle though.

I had some major issues with LR2. I finally deleted it and copied the file from the disk to my desktop and reinstalled from there. That seems to have improved the program to the point where it is usable. My question is do I have to step through the upgrades, LR2.1, LR2.2, to get to LR2.3, or does 2.3 contain all of the previous upgrades?

2.3 is fully inclusive; no need to start at the beginning.

Great it is not with money. Nobody would buy an "patch" for such an product, specially when having stable releases.

This release is still extremely buggy. It's actually worse than 2.2 (if you can believe that). I was able to struggle through the crashes of 2.2, but 2.3RC will instantly close when it's trying to process anything. This happens frequently when selecting a photo, selecting a folder in the library, or when zooming in to 1:1. I might have to roll back to 2.2 because it's almost impossible to do anything in 2.3RC
I'm running XP SP2 32bit

Several days ago I installed 2.3. I am running Vista x64 and Lightroom version: 2.0.

Over the weekend, I noticed that the "Edit in Photoshop CS3" link opens up Photoshop, but the photo does not open.

I am thinking about rolling back to 2.2 - but I don't know how to do that. I've tried several system restore points, but they don't complete successfully.

Question - how do I roll back? Or should I uninstall and then reinstall 2.0 and be happy with that?

TIA

A couple of things to take a look at...

Check to see that your version of PS CS3 is 10.0.1. Another cause of this problem, believe it or not, is if you have too many characters in the IPTC Copyright field or the Copyright URL field.

If you really want to roll back to 2.2 then uninstall LR. Here's the link for 2.2 http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4234&fileID=3948

Good luck!

Thanks, Gene - I was able to roll back to 2.2. I actually had the exe file on my desktop from before and I was able to run it. And all is well.

Thanks!

Gene, how do I rollback to 2.1? That was the last decent version that Adobe made. Shame on them. 2.2 is unbearable, and 2.3 is even worse.

Hi Carlos!

Sorry to hear that! I think 2.3 is much better but understand that some people are having issues.

For PC: Uninstall the current version. Reinstall 2.1. If you don't have the file here's the link - http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4072

For Mac: Just run 2.1 instead. If you don't have the file here's the link - http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4071

Good Luck!

Hey Guys,
Lightroom 3 beta is out! Someone's asleep at the blog . . .

Hey Kevin! O'Reilly discontinued the Inside Lightroom blog. You need to start checking the main blog at http://oreilly.com/blogs/ for any Lightroom updates. I've already put up several posts on LR3. Enjoy!

Hi Kevin,

I agree with you that Lightroom 3 beta is out! but because of it's beta version, we cannot access full features. Instead of that i suggest you guys to go with Lightroom 2.6 final version which allow users to edit RAW files coming from the latest DSLR like the Canon EOS 7D and the Nikon D3s.

Thanks.
