New Calibration Choices in Lightroom 2
One of the new features in Lightroom 2.0 that will probably go unnoticed by many users is a major change to the way camera calibration can be used. With 2.0 (and Camera Raw 4.5), Adobe is introducing a new DNG based profile. Available from the Adobe Labs site as a free beta download, there are profiles for Canon and Nikon cameras, as well as a new profile editor.
Download the profiles and editor from here. The profiles cover all of the built-in Picture Styles (Canon) and Picture Controls (Nikon).
To use them, go to the Camera Calibration panel in the Develop module, and select the profile from the pop-up menu.
Only the appropriate ones will be available, depending on the type of raw image you have selected - in other words, if you select a CR2 file, you'll only see the options for Canon.
If you're not a Canon or Nikon shooter, or you'd like to either create new profiles or fine tune profiles for your camera, the DNG Profile editor is the way to go. Because there are quite a few options here, I'll cover this in a two or three part posting. In the meantime, if you have one of the supported cameras, install the new profiles and see what they can do for you!

This is pretty neat. I'll have to try it. I am a little confused though. Are you saying we have to convert to DNG yo use these profiles?
Also how do they differ from presets other than being in a different spot.

Hi Gavin -
In order to create a new profile you'll need to save the reference file as a DNG - that's all the Profile Editor works with (I'll cover that in the next post). The profiles themselves work with raw files just like the previous profiles did.
Profiles differ from presets in that they only affect tone and color via a set of color tables, and in some cases a tone curve. Applying a profile doesn't make adjustments to exposure, color temp, etc.

After having installed the Profiles, it is fun to take a file and scroll through the Profiles, noticing the changes. What this does is give you a "better" starting point before doing the rest of your editing in the Develop module.
I find that this is the "first" thing that I do when I begin working in the Develop module.
Thanks for the lead to the excellent tool. I'll be sure to check it out.
Thanks for info
the only option my lightroom 2.4(64 bit)has is embedded. How do I get the other options cause the program is up to date
If your only option is embedded your picture is probably a jpeg and not raw or dng.
