Lightroom 2 Beta - the second monitor is alive.
Sorry for being late again with this post, but it is the Songkran (Thai New Year) holiday season in Thailand. A lot of people also call this the water festival, which quite literally means that you can not step out of the house without being completely drenched with water.
When I first arrived in Thailand (oh so many years ago) Songkran was a fairly gentle festival, with the majority of the Thai people just blessing each other with sprinkles of perfumed water to the forehead, dancing, drinking and dining with your friends, relatives and neighbors. There were always some rowdy pockets of uncivilized behavior but they were fairly easy to avoid.
Unfortunately it is now to a large degree the holiday of unruly hooligans who use pick-up trucks with water barrels and water cannons to douse anyone and anything they can find. When they see a dry person (especially a good looking young girl) they will jump out of their truck and completely drench that person with water and sticky multi-colored powder. There are of course a lot of serious traffic accidents and the annual holiday period death toll is constantly climbing.
A side effect of this week long holiday is that many people choose to stay indoors and play on-line computer games instead. The internet connection is constantly breaking down and at the moment moving so slowly when it is operating, that my ADSL connection is not even half the speed of a normal 56K land line. It took me almost twenty four hours to completely download the new Adobe Lightroom 1.4.1 upgrade.
Anyway the big question of the week is am I thrilled about the Lightroom 1.4.1 upgrade? No not really. Unlike a lot of Lightroom users I have not put my entire library and workflow into the Adobe version 1 software. I have continued to operate in the experimental mode just like we were all told to do in the Lightroom Beta days.
So why am I not thrilled? Because Lightroom 2 Beta is what I have been waiting for and now that it is here I am not interested in going backwards. from this point forward you will see me only working with Lightroom 2.
You have already read in my previous post and the posts of other bloggers on this forum, about the new tools available in the Library, Develop and Print sections, but what really clinches it for me is the ability to use two screens. I have always preferred to work this way and now that it is available, I see no reason to make do without it.

I'm sorry but none of my screen capture utilities allow me to capture the second window. If I figure out a way I will add some images to this post.
Have you noticed that none of the tools work on the second monitor? On my Mac I can use the second monitor as a loupe but I have not been able to use tools on it-- unlike, for instance, Aperture, where both monitors are fully functioning. This means that you can see the results enlarged but you cannot see what you are doing except by going back to the primary screen and working as you did before. The utility and functionality of the second screen is less than the buzz.
