Instant Turnaround in Lightroom 2.0 Beta
When the Lightroom 2.0 beta came out, there was much mention of the improved auto-adjust setting. It seems a small thing, but when it comes to being able to deliver quick proofs of a big shoot, could turn out to be reason in itself for upgrading. Let me say emphatically, though, that there are certainly plenty of other very good reasons for upgrading.
Yesterday, I re-shot one of my favorite test shots: my neighbor’s clothesline in the bright Costa Rican sun. My immediate reaction was that there was no way I was going to be able to recover detail in the white clothing. Here’s how the shot looked, after a little cropping, right out of camera. Look at the right side of the histogram.
Here’s what happened after clicking AutoTone
Check out all the added detail in the highlights. I found it really easy, BTW to “polish it” by expanding the Quick Develop settings and dropping the Exposure by one click and adding just a little recovery and fill light all without having to go to the Develop module at all.

Nice. It's good to see AUto settings being improved. I've spent a lot of time tweaking xml to try and get a general use auto preset, and there's still room for improvement
I'm excited about LR 2. It should make tedious workflow even faster

Not installed it yet. A quick info: is it easy to import images from LR 1.4 ?
It's easy to import images from LR 1.4, though I'd strongly recommend doing it from a folder that was on a separate drive, or at least in a second directory. You can create that second directory when you first import the images into Lightroom 1.4.
My experience has been that Lightroom 2.0 will recognize what I've done in 1.4...but that's not an "official" statement. Adobe warns that it doesn't work the other way around, but you can export to Photoshop if you want to send out your 2.0 adjustments...and, beleive me, you will.
