Lightroom 1.4
Hot off the press is Lightroom 1.4 (and its companion, Camera Raw 4.4). Check out Adobe’s Lightroom Journal to see what’s new (or cut straight to the release notes); the short and sweet of it includes:
- support for recently introduced camera models (Canon’s newest Rebel and Nikon’s D60 among them),
- a few minor corrections related to camera profiles and gray scale conversion,
- and at long last, a fix for the printing problems that been plaguing some photographers since upgrading their Mac to Leopard.
I have installed the update and things are running smooth as silk; feel free to post your results in the comments. And remember — as always — be sure to back up your existing Lightroom data before updating your copy in the event that something does go awry during the installation process.

After kicking its tires, you’ll notice that this release is definitely a point upgrade; it is meant to fix known issues and is by no means a match for the features and updates that Apple included in Aperture 2. So don’t be disappointed to if you don’t see anything new in your day-to-day flow. The big stuff will be coming down the pipe in the release of Lightroom 2, whenever that is :).
PS: And for those that have forgotten what Rule #5 is, you can jog your memory by clicking on “The Five Rules…” item in the application’s Help menu.

So, this AM I downloaded 1.4. Did a bit of shooting today and yesterday, and upon trying to load them into lightroom, I got a message at the top of every photo "An unknown error occurred" I used both my canon 40D and my Canon XTi, same message.
Anyone else with this problem?
I think I have a lens problem (that is what I was testing today) my 40mm f4 DO hit the gimble hard a few days ago, and I am worried that there is a problem with the lens...but I cannot see how a lens problem would make a difference to Lightroom.
Any input would be appreciated.
Update to above:
I shot with a different lens, same problem. Then went back and opened other photos, they all operate without problems. This seems to happen when I try to do a 1:1 enlargement. it seems to be in the loading larger preview. I am bringing in 1:1 previews.
There is an issue being researched that Lightroom 1.4 on Windows machines has trouble importing and converting to DNG. The result is the error message you see.
It appears that this does not happen on Mac, and it also appears that a workable solution is to use the stand-alone DNG converter and then import the resulting files into Lightroom.
There are several topics on this issue at http://www.adobeforums.com and http://www.lightroomforums.net if you would like to read about the issue and solutions while waiting for a fix to arrive.
Ok, I am getting the same exact error message with my Olympus E-3 and others are reporting the same on DPReview.com
Does this update have a problem?
I have yet to run into any problems with Lightroom 1.4 on the Mac, however many people are reporting issues importing files as DNGs into Lightroom on Windows (both XP and Vista). So far there's no word from Adobe as to when a fix will be issued. Thus, Windows users should hold back on installing the 1.4 update for now.
There are several problems with 1.4:
1. DNG corruption on import (Windows only, it appears).
2. JPG rendering issues where JPGs are layered onto themselves (double image).
3. Database backup issues introducing possible (unconfirmed) corruption.
4. Export rendering strips EXIF times.
I expect, however, that Adobe will rectify this in short order.
Honestly, when I saw the important NOTE:
(Important note
If you have not backed up your Lightroom library, please do so before installing the Lightroom 1.4 update and choose the optional "Test this database for corruption" feature during the backup. If you receive an error during the corruption testing, visit the Lightroom support page for further instructions before updating to Lightroom 1.4.)
at the download page I opted not to download this release. Not that I am against upgrades, but it sounded to me like Adobe was expecting problems. What I don't need right now is a problem with Lightroom. My catalogs are backed up each day, but to go through and test the integrity of each catalog, whoa, lot of work there. I'll wait a couple of weeks. Like Dave said, windows users should hold back. I have a Mac, but .....
As James Duncan Davidson mentioned in his most recent post, Adobe is recommending that you rollback to 1.3 until a fix for these issues has been released.
