Another trip to Cambodia and a lingering case of the flu

If you are a regular reader of these blogs, you must be wondering what has happened to my weekly entries in the last month or so. I have actually had every intention of writing and publishing them, but a series of unforeseen and totally unrelated events have seemingly conspired to keep me from performing my duties.

It all started on a Friday morning (Thursday night in the US) a few weeks ago when I was leaving for a trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia from Bangkok, Thailand. The flight only takes one hour so I had expected to write a post about the flight, including a few pictures of the trip. The Bangkok Airport is one of my favorites so I was looking forward to a quick and pleasant journey (and a clever blog entry).

Unfortunately my airline was intent on punking all their passengers that day, by delaying all their flights by over four hours. There is just nothing like spending six hours in an airline terminal these days, eating and drinking mediocre food at exorbitantly inflated prices. It did give me more time to photograph the departure terminal though and I now have a much better understanding of what it must be like to work in this very expensive shopping mall and transport terminal.

The flight itself was very quick and uneventful but the immigration procedure in the Phnom Penh airport was very slow that day so by the time I got to my hotel it was already dark. I was very tired by that point but pulled out my computer and found that the hotel Wi-Fi system required a prepaid card and that it was too late in the day to purchase one. Since I was scheduled to leave Phnom Penh for Siem Reap by bus at 7:30 am the next morning, I decided to pack it in and get some sleep.

The six hour bus trip was fairly uneventful but my ticket order had been misplaced and I was put into the last row of seats which did not allow for enough room for my legs, fortunately the Cambodian Apsara (classical) dancer seated next to me was very small in stature, sympathetic to my plight, and allowed me to use part of her space to park my oversized foreign legs. Nevertheless at the end of my journey I was very tired and after checking into the hotel I crashed out and did not awake until the next day.

I should explain that the next day (and for the rest of the week) I had to arise at 4:30 am to get my self and several adventure photo tour clients ready for sunrise to sunset photography in and around the temples of Angkor. This schedule effectively killed any thoughts of working on my blog or even turning on the computer to do much more than check my email and upload the days images. It was a really great week for bonding with my new Nikon D300 though.

Fast forward to a week later and I have traveled back to Thailand, dropped most of my equipment (and laundry) off at my house in Thailand, washed my car and am heading out for a few more days of photography in and around Bangkok. When I finally do stop my travels, I find that I have picked up a flu bug of some sort (probably from my 10 year old son on the day I returned from Cambodia) and my head hurts so much that I can't use the computer for more than two or three minutes at a time.

Today (another week later) is the first day that I feel half way normal again and can once again work on the computer. I don't have any particular Lightroom insights for today, but will try to add a few more images (and thoughts) to this posting in the next couple of days, as I go over the work from my recent travels.

That's Cambodia for ya! Beautiful images, but Cambodia will easily wear you down. Worth it though.
