What's in the Pipe for 2008?

Only one thing is a “for sure” in 2008: the Date category in your metadata browser will have another entry added to it.

Apart from that, what else will happen? It safe to say that 2008 will surely be another great year for photographers as the bar in digital equipment will keep getting higher and higher. Canon and Nikon both recently updated their high-end SLRs (the Mark III and D3, respectively), but one market segment that I will be following with interest are full-sized 35mm-equivalent sensors: Canon introduced the full-frame 5D almost 2 years ago and it has remained lonely at its pricepoint. Meanwhile the 30D has been upgraded to become the 40D, and Nikon’s lineup has seen similar revisions. Will 2008 be the year that the full-frame sensor gains some more traction in consumer-accessible cameras or will the 5D’s genes go the way of the dodo? And the “low-end” (I use the term loosely) entry-level SLRs keep getting better and better with each revision — where will they be one year from now? And what will we see from the other manufacturers — Sony, Panasonic, et al?

I will be floored if Lightroom 2.0 doesn’t make its way onto our hard-drives sometime in 2008; it’s more a matter of when we’ll get our grubby little hands on it and which features will be packed into it (an entirely new module, perhaps?) rather than if. Similarly, it will be interesting to see where Apple decides to take Aperture in order to gain ground on Lightroom, and what other software might be released into the segment to fan the flames. Now that we’ve all wrapped our heads around non-destructive editing, it will be interesting to see what each software package will offer to differentiate itself from its competitors.

All I can say is… let the race begin! Feel free to chime in with your thoughts, hopes, and predictions.

Almost 1 year after Lightroom 1.0 release, I'm pretty sure that Adobe checked carefully how this software fits into the market, especially along Photoshop, in order to decide which direction it has to go. Remember this Camera Raw guru meeting a few weeks ago...
I think that, beside adding new features, the release of a full SDK will be a major event and will boost Lightroom into the stratosphere.
To get the idea, DxO last release is now able to explore Lightrooms library and this company made totally clear that they want to push integration even further.
Looks like we will have some fun and excitement in the near future ;-)

Numbered masks with feathering slider would save me most trips to PS!

Having had Lightroom since v1 and enjoying its ease of use, I would like to see a few more of the commen photo editin from PS added as part of LR. Adobe to make LR "the" photo all round amateur/professional tool would be excellent.

Additions in v2; addition in Export to add framing and relocation of Copyright text, extension to SDK, ability to maintain layers from PS edits, nice sync of libraries between laptop/desktop machines..

Just a few nice to haves.

I'll agree with Wayne;
customization of the copyright placement/size is very important in my view, and the ability to create and label as many different colour labels as you want within a set, I find 5 a bit too limiting.

Looking forward to 2008! Rich :)

All I would like to see is the ability to have the noise ninja plugin work as seemlesly as Bibble and I would have all I could ever ask for.

Well that and to have the auto import have two different path.. i.e. copy the RAW to your library for development and move it to a different backup directory.

The most important thing to me is that Lightroom starts recognizing the NEF-development settings in the RAW-files and shows NEFs in all their beauty...
