A Good Idea: Genius For The App Store

With so many apps in the iPhone App Store, and dozens more being added each and every day, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find stuff that’s new.

Over at allaboutiphone.net, James Burland has proposed an idea: Genius for apps.

He proposes using the push notification service as a means of letting users stay in touch with changes at the Store. Users could assign rules, such as “Push notify me when any new application receives 5 stars in it’s first 5 users reviews,” and they’d be informed appropriately.

I think there’s a lot to be said for this, but I doubt that Apple would go for something as complex as that; I suspect they’d go for a much simpler approach that emulates the Genius playlist feature now in iTunes.

So when opening the App Store (either on your desktop or on your iPhone), a new control would open up “Genius App Store”, which would examine your past purchases, past browsings on the Store, ratings, often-viewed categories and so on, and conjour up a list of apps it thinks you might be interested in.

To round it off nicely, you’d be able to check all the apps you wanted and have them all installed at once; maybe other options would be “Buy all” or “Install all the free ones.”

Genius is too good a brand for Apple to limit it to music alone. I think James has hit on something here, and that it is very likely to appear in the App Store in the near future.

I think that Genius works for music because you typically like listening to similar types of music. For apps, however, people are not going to want 5 of the same kind of apps. If I have purchased a To-Do app, I don't want Genius telling me about 5 new To-Do apps. Maybe that's just me?

Well hopefully it would be designed in such a way as to *prevent* that happening. Genius does try to find "similar" music for people shopping on the Music Store, but when it comes to generating Genius on-the-fly playlists, it does a pretty good job of being eclectic. I think there's more to the Genius technology than simply matching up purchases.

I think you can accomplish the same thing using Pinch media's feeds. E.g., http://feeds.feedburner.com/RecentlyAddedIphoneApplications-PinchMedia

Another way to keep up to date with new and changed items in the App Store is http://appshopper.com/.
