Waiting on Apple

When it comes to the iPhone, supply and demand principles are surely in action. iPhone developers, who have been waiting for Apple to throw open the beta program to all comers may have to wait a little longer. As of today, Apple had made no announcement. Many developers have been left on the sidelines feeling marginalized by the opening of AppStore with their products yet untested on the actual iPhone or iPod touch, let alone ready for sale along side early admissions.

Development units remain missing in action as well. Apple does not seem to be selling development-only contract-free hardware at its ADC store. That alone raises the cost of iPhone development from $99/year to about $1500/year due to contract and unit costs.

I was hoping today would see the end of the NDA, the end of beta, and I'd be able to start posting code tutorials but that too remains a hazy matter. Apple has not issued any statements or changes.

So we remain in wait mode for the moment.

Yes, this is really frustrating. I understand that there is a closed beta. What I do not understand is why Apple is not sending out any information to the developers standing on the sideline. When will other developers get access? August? 2008? 2010?

We developers invested time and money.

Steve - give us the certificates to sign our code and send in our apps.

Arghhhhh...

Cheers,
Zeph

I, too am frustrated. I applied, day 1 & got the standard "we'll let you know" response from Apple.

Still, Apple has just given birth to triplets:
-- iPhone 3G/iTunes/Activation
-- The App store
-- MobileMe

It was a rough labor/delivery but Mama and the 3 newborns are doing well!

I just hope that after a little time to recoup her strength, that Mama will pay some attention to we siblings who have been patiently waiting...

Wouldn't you know it!

15 minutes ago I got my "atta boy" letter from Apple... only gripe is that I couldn't change the shipping from 5-day... ah, well :)

wadda go Apple!

A development unit would be great, but how would that work? It would need data connectivity to really allow testing, and you wouldn't have that without the stupid AT&T contract.
