Now that I've had a chance to think about the next generation iPhone, there's this nagging thought: What am I going to do with my current iPhone?
This is where the iPhone is not like a computer. If it were, I could relegate it to some specific task and go about my business. For example, former laptops are serving as dedicated podcasting stations, media servers, and loaners to other Mac users. But I can't really do that with an iPhone unless I get another AT&T account... and those ain't cheap.
Some folks have recommended selling it on eBay. Yeah, me and 500,000 other dudes. That plan doesn't seem to have legs.
The thing is, my current model is perfectly good. Even though I strolled into an Apple Store at 11 pm nearly a year ago and walked out with an 8GB model, it still looks great and functions just as well.
So, I'm looking for ideas here. If I upgrade, what am I going to do with iPhone 1.0?

Give it as a gift to someone. Can be used as an iPod Touch/emergency phone without the need for a monthly payment.
Sell/Give it to someone for development. Most of the new features will work on it, right?
I'm likely to keep mine for development. Assuming, you know, acceptance.
My SO is going to give hers to her brother. Converted to O2's Pay As You Go. So O2 gets two customers automagically.
I'll be taking the Flowers for Algernon approach -- letting my iphone revert to an ipod, probably in a $50 stereo set up housed somewhere in the kitchen. It'll serenade me as I do the dishes and over time mostly forget it was ever something more than a sleek walkman.

Yeah, I have not one, but two of these. Bricked one, bought a second, then unbricked the first. The second is still pristine, but with a never-been-activated AT&T SIM Card. What do I do with the two of these?
OK, next idea: if selling on Ebay among half a million other does not have legs, sell if off of the Ebay - on Google Checkout.
Hey, I'm from Czech Republic (which is among countries with iPhone 3G start later during the year, not on July 11th), still interested to buy a pristine condition iPhone for a good price.
To give you an idea, what price may bounce from, look at this Vodafone Italy announcement (shortly - iPhone 3G - People preferring a pre-pay plan for private users can buy the 8Gb iPhone for €499 or the 16GB model for €569.):

I remember the phone had to be activated to become functional. Once you stop paying for service on iphone 1, will you be able to use it as a glorified ipod touch? I would like to upgrade and would be perfectly happy with ipod touch functionality.
If you take the train to work like I do, you could use the 'old' iphone as a 'snatchable' itouch.
Just strip it of personal information but use it as a n mp3 player and video player and then if someone swipes it and hops off the train (reports of that from the MBTA in Boston, we've been warned to hang on to our gadgets and not flash them around) you won't be risking identity theft and tears.
there's also the jailbreak option - once jailbroken, install cydia and do what you would normally do to an old laptop... turn it into a webserver, make it the SSH conduit for your house, turn it into a router will fully compliant IPFW software, make it a firefly music server, etc. etc.
if you have a favorite unix/python/ruby app that needs to quietly run in the background somewhere, an extra iphone is faster than 500Mhz G3 iMac.
