The iPhone development excitement continues on as a consequence of WWDC and the possible 11 July launch of AppStore (and Firmware 2.0). So let me point out a huge business opportunity. If you're an audio or graphics designer, now would be a great time to hit the market with your wares. iPhone developers are crying out for good button and background designs and high-quality audio beeps, bings and clicks.
Apple has sent a clear message: keep away from our media. That's not a surprise. Today, on the way home I heard a radio ad using Apple's "Done.aiff" as part of (I believe) a Comcast commercial. So who's out there selling royalty-free equivalents?
I'm not talking about strident in-your-face material. The iPhone experience needs to be subtle. Listen to the Apple-supplied audio. It's just barely there -- enough to send a message, not enough to draw more attention to itself than to the process at hand.
Creating the right visual and audio components is an art. I've googled at length and found mixed results. Among the best out there is SoundSnap, which offers free royalty-free sounds that can be used in commercial work. I particularly like their waveform previews, which give a good indication of how a sound works. They have a nice Buttons category, with mostly wav and mp3 sources.
Does anyone have other good quality resources to recommend? Please drop a note in the comments.
