Roadmap for O'Reilly's Inside iPhone Site

Back in early 2000 when Mac OS X was coming of age, I thought that O'Reilly should have a web site dedicated to this new UNIX-based operating system. Without much fanfare, a small group of us launched Mac DevCenter, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable projects I've ever been a part of.

Fastforward eight years ahead, and I see similar technology disruption happening with the iPhone. This is such a rich area, and there's going to be much to talk about. Just as before, O'Reilly needs a place to call home for all things related to this platform, and that will be this site, Inside iPhone. As we were planning this project, I had some great conversations with technologists who are passionate about the iPhone platform. Those conversations helped me build a roadmap for this site. And since I want you to be part of this endeavor, I'm going to spell out that roadmap now. I'm sure there will be a few detours along the way, but this should get us going in the right direction.

Four Lane Highway

Editorially speaking, there are four lanes we want to fill. I realize that each of these areas will most likely take on their own life, but our starting points will focus on here.

  • The iPhone SDK: This is a no-brainer, I know. But one of the themes I'd like to publish on is best practices for application development. I want the Inside iPhone site to feature helpful development tips, sample code, and a host of other tools to ease programming efforts. I envision smart people helping other smart people. And I'll do my best to get the inside scoop from Apple whenever possible.
  • Web Apps and Dashcode: I haven't seen a ton of discussion
around Dashcode, but a new version was released with the iPhone SDK.
Seems like there are some good possibilities here for developing some
    very interesting Web apps.
  • Innovations and cool stuff: When you combine great hardware with a promising platform, there's fertile ground for creativity. I want to cover as much of this as possible, from the independent developer level to what's happening with the big partner companies. I think AppStore will be a big part of this conversation. li>

  • Enterprise: iPhone 2.0 plays nice with IT, but I'm sure some approaches will work better than others for optimizing the experience. We should cover those.

Initial Approach

We're going to start out with a small blogging crew led by Erica Sadun. There will be regular posts and hopefully some good discussion around them. We'll also have a forum for the open exchange of ideas. Once we get our feet beneath us, I want to start publishing tutorials, screencasts, and podcasts.

If you'd like to participate, just drop us a line and let us know your particular area of interest or expertise.
