More voices == better books

I mentioned yesterday that I've been conducting a Head First author training in Boston. We've got about 18 authors (although not that many books) represented, and I've been having the time of my life. What's amazing at these sessions is not so much the teaching, but the learning. Sound strange for the guy that's conducting the training to do the learning? Not so much, at least not in Head First land...

Everyone comes to these sessions with such different expectations, but even more than that, different experiences with Head First. They all love the books, for often for vastly different reasons. And it reminds me of our audiences. Too often, we think about an audience (no plural); but there are different types of learners, different experiences, different emotions that all are in play. And we want to hear every one, every experience, every reason someone loves Head First.

It's not always easy, distilling an experience into a few words or sentences (and some authors don't try, they give us a lengthy essay on what they love, and that's cool, too). But with each new testimonal, really, we find out what's working, and what's not. We find out if crosswords really are effective at the end of a chapter, or if they just give you an easy out to put the book down and come back late (we want to be a page-turner, not a put-downer).

So what turns you on about Head First? I'm not looking for a ra-ra, aren't we great response... but I'd love to hear about those singular experiences that brought you here. What did it for you? What do you remember about your "first" Head First experience? Let us know... join the authors here in shaping how we construct these books in the future.

And most of all, thanks for coming around. We're trying hard to bring you interesting content, weekly and now daily with the blogs, and keep you engaged.

Thanks!
-B
