Moldy but Good: Keyboard Performance Hacks

The Zizzle Zoundz

At the premiere Get Connected Summit back in October, I got to contribute some questions for a terrific panel called “The Impact of New Technology on the Aesthetic of Music Making.” I'll share some of those in a future entry. For now, though, I thought I'd share a tip from panelist Kid Beyond, who wowed everyone with a musical toy called the Zizzle Zoundz.

The Zoundz combines a blob-shaped white base with "sound objects," translucent shapes that light up and trigger riffs when you place them on top. Very hands-on and fun to watch. In a similar vein, Kid Beyond recommended checking out Moldover.com, where the artist of the same name shows you how to deconstruct toy-like MIDI keyboards and turn them into hands-on performance controllers. Check out this video:

Makes me want to pull apart that wheezy old Korg 707 in my garage — and pick up a Zoundz. What have you deconstructed lately?

(Thanks also to DiscThomas.)

@DJ Microwave: Yeah, that is a Kurzweil ribbon controller. But on second thought, the Zoundz is kinda pricey. I'd rather get some extra batteries for my Kaossilator. ☺

Yow! This guy really has it figured out! We just had a demo of Ableton Live here at SMC; and seeing this guy's hacked controller really brings it all together. I love the Kurzweil(?) slider controls and the real-time plug-in control of the wave playback.

So, about that toy.... how many do you have now?!
