Photoshop CS4 from the Photographer's Perspective

Good friend of O'Reilly and Adobe Photoshop PM Bryan O'Neil Hughes has written a guest post today on John Nack's blog, featuring all the things that are new and interesting for Photographers in Photoshop CS4. I get the feeling that Bryan particularly serves as the "voice for shooters" on the PS team. His list features a photographer's take on some things you've already heard about: Open GL support, Bridge Collections for better rating and sorting, on-image editing (aka targeted adjustment). But there are a few goodies in there that sometimes get lost: dual-monitor friendliness, the addition of "intelligent color preservation" with a Vibrance adjustment layer, improved Dodge/Burn, and better Alignment power. It's definitely worth checking out Bryan's post to see if there's anything you missed.

Speaking of Photoshop for photographers, O'Reilly presents the new book by our own Derrick Story, which shows photographers how to operate the gigantic oceanliner that is Photoshop as if it were a sleek, nimble speedboat that gets shooters just where they need to go. And it's in a pocketable size so you can take it with you on your photographic voyages. Bryan's photographer-centric enthusiasm about what was coming for CS4 was great encouragement that we were on the right track when Derrick was writing the book. Photoshop CS4 Companion for Photographers hit the shelves last week, and it saw its debut at Photoplus Expo, where it happened to appear in the O'Reilly booth with none other than... Bryan O'Neil Hughes himself, who stopped by to chat with Derrick and another O'Reilly luminary, Katrin Eismann. (Bryan's in the middle, the book is the thing on the right with fireworks on the cover in front of the tall guy.)

By the way, this image was prepped with Photoshop CS4's improved "Save for Web" feature, now with Metadata preservation! (You can add that one to your list, Bryan.)
