Beware the dangerous icon
Jason Snell, over at Macworld, tells us that Apple has redesigned the icon of the Energy Saver preferences pane into one of these newer, more energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs that are progressively entering our homes.
As I do not own one of these new MacBooks, I cannot check this assertion for myself, but I will trust him, and I invite you all to have a peek at the new design, which is quite a feat of illustration [1].
I find it touching that Apple still keeps time around for these in-jokes, despite being so overworked on many fronts including, I would assume, interface tweaks for the next iterations of the iPhone, Mac OS X and non-touch iPods. It's also a great way of subtly reminding users that Apple does care about the environment. It's not quite an easter egg and it's not quite Clarus-like but it's a flash from the "old" Apple of yesteryear.
Unfortunately, Apple just chose a potentially dangerous lightbulb to tell us about the new, better and safer technologies they have been working on Oh, irony, how I love thee.
[1] Seriously, mad props to the designer, this is one cool icon!

thank you for this post.
Hmmmm ...
Not all fluorescent bulbs give off significant ultraviolet radiation, but for some if you are within two centimetres the exposure is equivalent to that experienced by being outside on a sunny summer's day in the UK. (Quote from The Register)
Is this reasonable ? Two Centimeters. A sunny summer day in the UK? Dangerous? Have these people ever kept within two centimeters of a normal light bulb? Leads to higher degree burns.
Apple, good on ya getting more green. Keep it on ;-)
Cheers, Marc
