The iPhone, now with iWipette

Now that the iPhone 2.0 firmware has been released, even if unofficially as I write these lines, iPhone 1.0 users have gained the ability to securely erase their devices, through the enhanced "reset" menu item.

Since the iPhone tends to store so much in unencrypted form on its internal memory, including some information we may not want revealed, such as those passwords for unofficial applications we tested in our jailbreaking days (ever used Terminal? Mm?), it may be a good move for all iPhone 1.0 owners to start with a secure wipe before proceeding.

Thus re-virginized, the iPhone can once again be carried in confidence. Of course, the data will keep on accumulating, but since we are already taking some time to upgrade the firmware and setup the phone afresh after a reset, we may as well go out to lunch while the data is duly scrubbed.

Just a thought…
