Which Kitty is Different?
Hey All - Here are a few pictures of some kitty cats that I've photographed around the world. They have several things in common: they were originally RAW files (which have a wider exposure latitude than JPEG files), all were cropped (because I like to fill the frame with the subject) the kitty cats were all photographed with my Canon 100-400mm IS lens at f/8 (the sharpest f/stop on that lens), I focused on the eyes (as I always do), and I took all the photos close to eye level (because I like to see eye-to-eye). One photo is different. I know it's kinda obvious, but someone asked me why? As soon as I post this note, I'm going to try to find out the answer. Any guesses out there? If so, post away!
Thanks,
Rick
P.S. No, these photos are not in my new book, Face to Face - but maybe I can talk my publisher into a Face to Face book on animals :-)

yo mike
that is the difference.... only one has its eyes open! i am trying to find out why this kitty is yawning with its eyes open, when all the other pix of have of cats show the eyes closed.
also, i am happy to see a few responses to this post so quickly. it's the least technical, yet the most commented on.
the color maybe be a bit off in some of the pix. i just grabbed them from a few different places.
in my new book, Face to Face, i talk about the eyes.
speaking of the eyes, if are not familiar with the term pupilometrics, it's the study of how the size of a subject's pupils affects our impression of the subject: wide pupils, an "open" subject; small pupils, a "closed" subject. check out the pupils of those pretty models on the covers of all those fashion magazines the next time you are going through the supermarket check out :-)
thanks to all,
rick
Looks like the little cat (ocelot?) was shot with a tungsten white balance. I'd bet that the lower part of it's cheeks are supposed to be whitish. The other three (lion, tiger, cheetah) look like they were daylight/outdoors.
Good eye, David. Maybe a fill flash was used?
The one with the open eyes (my first guess too) also seems to be lit differently — stronger flash or something.
only one has its eyes open.
