Venice Carnival Photos

js1.jpg

Hey All - Just back from Carnival in Venice. Here is one of my favorite photos. More to come. Just wanted to share a photo philosophy: "Make pictures, just don't take pictures."

It took me about 20 minutes to make this picture.... but making pictures is always worth the effort :-)

It's a daylight fill-in flash shot. I balanced the light from the flash to the daylight - so it does not look like a flash picture. The technique: meter the scene with your camera on Manual and set the exposure. Turn on your flash. Set the +/- exposure compensation to - 1 1/3 for starters. Check your camera's LCD monitor. Fine-tune your flash exposure compensation until no shadows (from the flash) are visible.

During the event, I used only one lens: Canon 24-105mm IS (on my 1Ds Mark III, which is a full-frame image sensor camera.)

If you go, plan on being surrounded by "a million" other serious photographers who want to get the same shot you are trying to get!!! You have to "embrace" the situation and try your hardest to get the shot, while not making the other photographers unhappy. If you get to St. Mark's Square around 7 AM, you'll encounter fewer shutterbugs.

Delta has a direct flight NY to Venice for about $600 during Carnival. Book early.

Hey, you may see me there in 2009!

P.S. More Venice Carnival photos in my new O'Reilly book, Face to Face (out in May 2008) - Rick

This photo truly engages the viewer, there is so much to take in. From the vivid color and detail, down to her perfectly captured reflection. You make digital photography look effortless - but you put a lot of hard work and creativity into making a photograph be the best it can be. Thank you for sharing your techniques!

Hi Rick.

Nice photo. I also publically just wanted to say thanks for all your help to our group while in Venice. Your easy teaching style made some difficult concepts very easy to grasp and resulted in some of the best photos I've ever taken.

Hi Rick-

I'm looking forward to your next book. Sitting in front of me-at all times-is your Complete Guide to Digital Photography. It's helped me in any number of situations. You write simply and clearly and I've learned quite a bit. I'm still making new discoveries in that book. Thanks.
