The Camera Looks Both Ways

E6.jpg

Hey All

I lead a fantastic workshop to Namibia last year, during which I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph in a Himba village.

The experience reminded me of an old expression: The camera looks both ways, in picturing the subject, we are also picturing a part of ourselves. Keep this expression in mind when photographing people, and you'll see that the mood, energy, emotion, etc., that you project will be reflected in your subject's face. So, you'll get a higher percentage of "keepers" from a photo session.

Much more on this type of "photo philosophy" in my "Face to Face" book, out in May.

If you are into photographing people, don't leave home w/o a reflector/diffuser kit. And don't forget your flash and wireless remote (for off camera flash.) Another important thing to remember is that it's often important (or essential) to control the light when photographing people.

Just wanted to share that expression, and this photograph with you.

C U,
Rick
P.S. Shadows/Highlights in Photoshop sure did help with this photo.

I think that the camera looks both ways, is a very apt expression for ricks work, you can see so much of his vibrancy and energy in his colorful and moving images. when looking at ricks images I always feel like someone has gone on a log a treasure hunt and at the end they found that moment, that image, which is like a colorful exotic jewel.
