iPod touch January Upgrade Issues

080115-iPodtouch-JanUpgrade.jpg
My daughter and I both have iPod touch-es. So, I decided to upgrade both of them to the January Upgrade announced this morning at Macworld 2008. I'm guessing the Apple Store has been hammered since reopening this morning because I had all kinds of problems trying to purchase the upgrade through iTunes. At first, it told me repeatedly that my address was incorrect. Then, it decided I was not in the US (I am). Finally, it let me purchase the upgrade after what must have been 10 or more attempts. After upgrading my iPod touch, I had iTunes disconnect it and then I connected my daughter's iPod touch to the USB sync cable. After upgrading its firmware to 1.13, I tried to purchase an upgrade for it. The purchase seemed go through. But, the upgrade was made on this second iPod touch. I tried a second time with the same result: No January Upgrade. Checking my iTunes transcations, I saw what appeared to be three purchases (ouch). So, I filled out the Apple Support form and am waiting for a response from Apple.

I then turned to my iPod touch with the January Upgrade and started looking at the new applets. The first thing I did was configure email to look at Yahoo Mail. Since, that worked well, I turned to adding my IMAP4 email account to it.This took quite a bit of time since it seemed to me that the process was not working (just saw the little rotating icon indicating it was trying to connect with the server). After fussing with it a bit more, it finally connected and brought down some email (slowly it seemed to me considering I was on an 802.11g WiFi connection). I noticed that the email client does not seem to support SSL for connecting to either the IMAP4 email server or the SMTP gateway. This is probably ok for iPhone users on a more-or-less secure EDGE network. However, I wonder about this for we iPod touch owners connecting to various public WiFi hotspots.

I'm really happy to see the addition of the mail, stocks, maps, weather, and notes applets to my iPod touch. But, I will be even happier when my daughter's iPod touch can be upgraded too and my iTunes billing issue gets resolved.

Apple have basically stolen my money. I bought my touch in March. It was old stock so did not have the January upgrade. The store gave me a $20 discount (I bought it in NYC) so when I got to the UK(where I live) I bought the upgrade on itunes for £12.99(about $26) and was very impressed.
So in May I got a virus on my laptop - i know stupid action on my part - and thought I had backed up all my data so didn't worry. I restored my laptop which tidied up a lot of issues as well as the virus. When I next synced my touch there seemed to be a problem so I restored that using the link on itunes.

When the touch was finished all my upgragde software was gone!!!

I followed all advice on apple.com to restore the software with no luck. So, I emailed apple and was told (after a few emails being exchanged) that the software could not be retrieved and there was nothing they could do.

So basically I have had 10 weeks use from the upgrade and I feel like apple have treated me quite shoddily. Not what I expected from such a well respected company. And yet Apple is held up as a "better" alternative to Windows!! I was even planning to switch from my Vista laptop to a mac air cos they look so cool - NOT NOW!!

I bought the upgrade back when it first came out and everything worked out fine until recetly when it kept freezing when I tried to use the mail app well then when I sync it, it doesn't want to put my new music on it and then when I un plugg it it will freeze up again and then after a day or so of this happening it seamed to work fine again...but then it started to crash every time I tried to use an app and so after I got to the point of where it wouldn't let me play music cause it would crash everytime i clicked the icon i decided to restore it. well when it restored it erased my january upgrade and after a day or so of tryig to get it back I decided might aswell just rebuy the upgrade..well then I get this waring that says you have already purchased the upgrade..and it won't let me purchase it again. any ideas?

I would like to thank alyssa for the link that leads to the buy now option. I haven't tried it yet, but will later tonight. For about 4 nights in a row, I have been wracking my brain trying to locate that infamous "buy now" button, maybe alyssa's link will help me and I can get my sanity back. After all, I am paying $20 for the upgrade, so I don't need additional aggravation...

Apple Tech support gave me this link that leads directly to the "buy now" option. Fixed me problem very quickly.

Personally speaking, I am outraged that Apple is charging early buyers of the iPod Touch $20 for a system update that ought to be free.

While I understand Apple's decision to charge money for the new applications the new $20 "application pack" also includes a SYSTEM UPDATE in the form of the home page editing, web clips, and lyrics features. All of these are updates to the currently existing iPod Touch software and NOT new applications, which means that they ought to be free to all users of the iPod Touch.

Adding insult to injury these applications are all hidden in the 1.1.3 system update, a whopping 104.4mb file that all users must download if they want to fix bugs in the system. These applications can only be used when you pay Apple $20 to "unlock" them, but even if you decide not to buy them they stay on your iPod taking up precious space that could be used for songs, videos, or photos.

Apple is normally wonderful when it comes to providing system support and updates, but having them shaft early adopters and loyal fans like this is offensive and shows that Apple has absolutely no regard for the iPod Touch community.

I have the ipod touch also and I finally got the upgrade out of apple. But I knowwhat the stores are doing with these iPods. I found Wal-Mart had the iPod for $279.99 but you get no update with it so that money you save goes right into the update and the iPod you bought is now $299.99. (I am typing this comment on the iPod.)

THose of you with problems finding the "Buy Now" button, hit this url: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=271872604&s=143441

Goes to a different page and worked for me.

I actually don't understand why we have to pay for the upgrade, when this upgrade comes with the newer version of iTouch (at the same selling price). Shouldn't Apple just give us the upgrade for free? It's the same thing as people suing apple for dropping the price!

Kyle said:

There is no "Buy Now" button to click. I've tried many times and done everything on the "checklist". Any suggestions of what to do?

itty said:

So i added an itunes account at my friends house, and it downloaded the software there. and now i cant figure out where to get it. so i wasted 20$ and i dont know what to do...

Yeah I can't find how to purchase the upgrade either... I can "find more information" about it, but haven't seen a single "purchase january upgrade" link anywhere.

I am having issue with the Weather icon of the new upgrade. For some reason it wont recognize any of the cities I type in and I can't figure out why.

Similar problems. I had to sync automatically - wiping out all my music...
but having only just received it for Xmas this wasn't a big a problem as
it will be for some.

Agree with jc (Jan22) "Also confused as to why they made auto-sync mandatory for the upgrade. The hard drive is so small on the iPod Touch that I'm sure most people manually manage the files, because there's no way my whole library would fit on that thing".

Not sure why they didn't warn us this was a necessary step. Would have
saved me a few days of aggravation and saved them receiving my messages.

I upgraded iTunes with the 7.6 and now it says my iTouch is an iPhone and will not sync! Waiting on apple to call me back but right now there is no way to use my iTouch!!

jc said:

Yeah, I went back and forth with support for a few days, and eventually they stopped answering me. Eventually I found out on the message boards that I would have to enable auto-sync, which erased all my songs, to install the upgrade. Kind of angry that support didn't just come right out and tell me that, it was a pretty simple answer to give. Also confused as to why they made auto-sync mandatory for the upgrade. The hard drive is so small on the iPod Touch that I'm sure most people manually manage the files, because there's no way my whole library would fit on that thing.

I was able to use the January update on my second Ipod Touch.

I had to restore my second Ipod to the original settings. Then set up the second Ipod as a new Ipod. When I updated the Ipod all of the applications that I purchased were on it.

It did erase all of the music on it. But I did have a backup and was able to restore them in no time.

I bought the Touch when it came out. I figured when they added Mail it would be a free upgrade because it was clear the Touch should've shipped with it in the first place.

So now Apple wants another $20. It's not enough that I bought 3 new systems this year, other hardware, software, iTunes and talked several other people in to buying an Apple. No. Apple just really *needs* another $20 from me.

If they had announced it was a free upgrade I would've been thrilled. Now I'm just angry.

IM LOVING THE NEW UPDATE!!!! IT WAS INSTALLED AND THE WHOLE ENCHILADA WITHOUT A SINGLE PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH I HAD TO UPDATE ITUNES!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND AND IS WELL WORTH $2O.

I purchased the Ipod Touch a week ago at Best Buy for the full price - then two days later the upgrade came out. I just assumed that Apple would be accomodating to those that had just purchased it - but not to be. First email they were clueless, second email unhelpful, and finally unresponsive.

So I bit the bullet and paid the $20.00. Guess what? Can't install it. I've done everything recommended - even restored the Ipod which wiped out all my songs and I had to put them back. Still doesn't work. I've asked for a refund of the purchase price of the software but no response.

However, Best Buy did the right thing and gave me back the $20.00 as a price adjustment.

Padaas: I recall reading that Apple might be providing free upgrades for touch owners who purchased their units in the 30 days prior to the announcement. I suggest you call Apple and/or visit your local Apple Store (if possible) to inquire about this.

Ijust bought mine a week ago, now I have to consider a $20 upgrade to the O/S????? What is the future of this!
NOT happy

Mark said:

I'm just pissed that I would actually have to buy these apps when apple should've included them from the get-go. I just bought my Touch 2 weeks ago, and I don't have them, but if I buy one in, say, a week or so, I'll get them with the unit. If this was maybe a year or so down the line, I _might_ be OK with it -- perhaps along the lines of an OS upgrade. BUT this device has only been available for a couple of months, and for Apple to charge those of us who willingly, and supportively jumped on the band-wagon for their wonderful new unit, is simply a despicable act...especially from a company who tries to pass themselves off as the good guys.

Jeff said:

just installed the new software and I am loving it. Why apple did not do this in the first place is beyond me. I believe they would have sold a lot more units and avoided many of the bad reviews that they recieved with the initial release. Wow, I was always hoping that my palm would someday morp into an video ipod device who knew it would work the other way.

nice but apple kinda forgot about the people in countries without an itune music store....

Hey, I managed to purchase the touch upgrade once without issue. But I had problems getting it onto the iPod. Apple's support was useless, I believe they must be swamped with unhappy customers (a) having to pay for the thing in the first place and (b) people have purchasing problems and (c) customers then having install problems.

Apple should *refund* the purchase price *and* give an extra to redeem this awful situation. It it truly shocking.

Steve: The info at store.apple.com shows that the new features are baked into the new touch-es which remain at the same price.

Steve said:

Is the price going up for the Touch off the shelf now?
the new upgrade is included. We have to pay twenty dollars for the upgrade.

zadian: Thanks for the SSL info/correction. I guess I was so annoyed by my problem upgrading the 2nd touch that I didn't look carefully enough.

zadian said:

Hi,
Mail on the iPod touch supports SSL encryption for IMAP and SMTP - at least it does with my email account. I don't know if all sorts of SSL are supported.

I activated the synchronisation of the mail accounts I have in iTunes and Mail on the iPod automatically was set up correctly (SSL for IMAP and SMTP).

The settings can be changed on the iPod in Settings - Mail - Account - Advanced
