Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 USB Headset on Mac

lifechatlx3000.giflifechatlx3000audacity.gif
The Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 is a reasonably priced (under US$40) USB stereo headset and microphone. Microsoft doesn't provide any Mac drivers so I just plugged it in to a Macbook to see if it worked. You can see from the screen caps here that both Garageband (iLife '08) and Audacity 1.2.5 recognized and worked with the device.

You can hear a brief recording I made while testing the LifeChat headset with my Mac at... OgasaWalrus.blogr.com Mac Mini-Cast #1.

The headset doesn't work perfect, for example, if you have iTunes open and you plug it in, the music still will be using the speakers. What you have to do is close with cmd+q the iTunes and open it again.
The worse thing is that the volume control doesn't work either, only to mute it.

We deserve it anyway for buying Microsoft products having a mac...

Likewise, my MAC as Ramiro suggested, go to the preferences, sound, and you'll notice that the headset is recognized in the header, click on the output and input settings and good to go, great info and another feather for the world of MAC.

hi there!
I have audacity, but I am not using it regularly. (I do use Hijacker for sound recording.) So I am not quite familiar with this program - yet when I plug in my Live Chat headset, nothing scans.. also in audacity preferences where you have built-in micro, built-in input and Microsoft as options I only get built-in input. And there is no automatic scan for audio devices..

any ideas what I may have to change preference wise? Or do I need other equipment maybe? quite clueless with the audio programs to be honest. THANKS!

Does this headset work with regular computer speakers and Ipods?

Fantastic! I just purchased a MacBook Pro, and was worried that I was going to have to buy another headset. It works quite well with Skype. However, unlike on my PC, when I'm talking in the mic I can't hear myself in the headphones--which takes some getting used to. Any of you have a similar issue? Any possible solutions?

Neal: The headset is just another USB audio device from the Mac's point of view. So, it should work with Skype.

Also you can use the Microsoft Life Chat headset as the output sound device for any application in the system if you select it in Preferences-->sound-->output and you can use the microphone of the headset as the input device choosing it in Preferences-->sound-->input, I have a macbook with Mac OSX 10.4.11 and it recognizes the headset perfectly when selected
