Line 6 Pocket Pod: Tone To Go

Why put an iPod on your waistband when you can sport a bulbous red guitar effect instead? The pioneering digital kidney bean of tone now comes in a battery-powered version called the Pocket Pod.

Five inches wide yet loaded with 300 digital effect presets and a guitar tuner, the Pocket Pod retails for around $129.

Unlike most other compact signal processors, the Pocket Pod is extensively editable via USB, thanks to a collaboration with CEntrance. It's also compatible with thousands of player-created presets at CustomTone.com.

Plug an iPod's output into the Pocket Pod's CD/MP3 input (left) and you can play along. I'm just waiting for someone to string up a third iPod set to record the output mix. Not shown: the USB jack.

Of course, guitar processors can add depth and character to other electronic instruments as well. I routinely play my bone-dry analog synth through a multieffects box. Having a pile of digital effect presets on call gives me much more flexibility when playing live.
