Better Podcast Vocals for Free

Location, location, location: In this brief online video, podcaster David Adam Weiss demonstrates how to improve your voiceovers dramatically just by tweaking your mic position.

Weiss Mic Position

Weiss makes his point with a $65 Giant Squid mic taped to a ballpoint pen, but says it works equally well with the $15 mic he uses for Boston Behind the Scenes.

After watching the Weiss demo, I looked more closely at the technique Australian broadcaster Ken Sparks used with the Rode Podcaster mic. Notice how he too avoids P-pops by talking past the mic rather than right into it:

I fly several aircraft and use headphones. I'd like to be able to insert a small microphone inside the headphone and record communications with pilot and copilot besides radio communication. Can you recommend a microphone for a DVR (not yet purchased?)

As promised, here’s the hat miking trick.

Thanks, Adam. I’ve made the correction. Which reminds me: I was going to mention your hat mic blog as well. Stay tuned.

Hey David!

I'm glad you found the video useful - it is the simple points of technique that make the most difference sometimes.

Good post, except that I'm Adam Weiss, not David (which is actually my dad's name).
