Analog Modular Fever

The fever I got is of the Analog Modular kind. There's a lot of that going around--a wonderful resurgence in hands-on, knobs-and-patch-cables, Not For Any Reason(R), synthesis.

I was laid out with the Influenza last week, because of NAMM, I think. I had assumed it was the Boogie Woogie variety; the kind that goes with the Rockin' Pneumonia. But as I thought about it, my condition may be related to a strange little series of recent events.

At the Electronic Musician magazine party, I found myself dancing to Western Swing music with Don Buchla, Suzanne Ciani, and Dave Smith's wife. Just the four of us, in front of the Elite Noisemakers. Later, I walked with Dave Smith, Ernie Rideout, Arne Schulz and some others to jam until all hours in Arlan's ice cream truck, which was full of drums, a bass rig, and analog synths. At one point, our party was even joined by Frank Serafine. So maybe the fever I caught was of a different variety.

Anyway, In bed with the flu, I decided that, when life tears you limb from limb, you can make limbonade. And that's when I got the Fever.

I finished my PAIA modular and got it to working condition.

And I recorded my first analog-only piece (which probably isn't strictly analog only, because of "Excaliburrito*,"

Excaliburrito aa.jpgbut what the hell), called "influenzes." It's over 16 minutes long.

and MONO.

Sometimes fun can cure you. It did me. And Analog Modular is all about fun. The title of Dave Smith's talk at Project BBQ 2003 was, in fact, "Software is the Future, but Hardware is more Fun."

Dig the player? Not that record companies are "bad," but more about Amie Street later.

Much Love to All,
FAT

*"Excaliburrito" is a custom-made voltage-controllable version of this thing built for me by my friend, feral game designer Thom, and I have decided that the name is Latin for "a little bit out of calibration."

VIVA EXCALIBURRITO!!
