The rapid growth of RIA technology into the lives of every day people just a few years ago has carried both the usability and user experience industries to a new high in popularity. The success of software (particularly on the web) has driven both of these terms into our vernacular, and yet they are still often confused or thought to be synonymous. This post is meant to help those new to the field or unfamiliar with the intricacies of design to understand the differences between the terms.
Maybe I'm not very smart (don't answer that!). Possibly it's because I got my Graphic Design degree almost 20 years ago. Or maybe it's because most of what I've learned about UX design is geared toward eLearning, where the...
This is an introductory post into the UX Revolution. In this series I will talk about the changes that RIA development is going through from an experience design perspective. I'll touch on everything from applications like Flash Catalyst to best practices in the XD process. Enjoy!

Introducing Silverlight Tools is a chapter from O'Reilly Media's Essential Silverlight 2 Up-to-Date by Christian Wenz, released this week.

I caught up with Andy Edmonds recently to talk about Scrutinizer which is an AIR app that simulates a users vision or attention while their view a web page. We cover a wide range of topics in the podcast including how vision works, eye tracking equipment, how AIR was used for Scrutinizer and even touched on origins of usability and eye gaze simulation. Andy's a cognitive psycologist and has done huge amounts of research in web usability, I always enjoy chatting with and learning from him.

The "Bad Usability Calendar" reminded me that it's just as important to look at mistakes as it is best practices. Here's a couple resources you and your team can use immediately to avoid common user interface pitfalls.
Given that I believe RIA technologies should only be used to improve usability and user experience in web software, I'm ecstatic that the role of the usability specialist is getting wide spread attention. It gained a spot in the U.S News list of Best Careers for 2008.
