Every day million people make use of Google products and these products are written mainly using one well known language: JavaScript! What makes this online software stable, fast and responsive is a good use of the language and an excellent system of data compression and asynchronous loading. Today this power is available to everyone, since Google has released its magic tool under Apache 2 license.
Whenever adding effects to Flex applications, I usually user the built-in Flex effects. They work with most flex components, are consistent, and are reliable. However, in cases where you want your application to be very expressive, they don't always act like you want them to. In those cases, I use Tweener, an animation "tween" library for ActionScript. In this post, we'll walk through a basic example using Tweener.
In this episode I get an overview of the Yahoo User Interface Library (YUI ) from Nate Koechley. We cover topics including how Nate got started there, the various elements in YUI, why Yahoo builds and maintains this library. We also touched on some of the more unique elements of Yahoo's offering for JavaScript developers including their integration with Flash, the Yahoo Pattern Library and how Yahoo plans to get more open source with their code.

After seeing the Oakland Crime Spotting project demo at Web Direction North last week I wanted to learn about about the various mapping tools and projects going on in the RIA space. I found some pretty handy toolkits for Flash and Ajax alike.
As we go hurling down the road of RIA innovation it's nice to have some guidelines and tools to help us create better user experiences. I think user interface design patterns should in everyone's toolbox. They help us come up with new ideas for our UIs, it helps us communicate inside and outside of our team and finally it helps us to avoid common pitfalls.
