Inside Aperture

Entries tagged with “aperture 2” from Inside Aperture

By default Aperture has a series of “built-in” smart albums that appear automatically. These smart albums function at the library level - meaning Aperture looks at all the images you import and any images that fit the criteria associated with...
As you use the Adjustment Panel you'll find that there is some overlap among some of the controls in Aperture. In the Exposure brick there are options to set the overall exposure, as well as the Black point, Recovery and...

Whither Fingerprinting?

For me, one of the most exciting new features that was added in Aperture was the Preview Fingerprinting, giving the potential for some really sophisticated integration between Aperture and other applications.

Aperture 2 Training Videos

For those of you who are relatively new to Aperture 2, or who feel like you’re not taking full advantage of all its features, I want to call your attention to a new Aperture 2 training series of videos...

Printing Tips

As you may have discovered, when you choose File >Print Image there are a lot of parameters to set. Most of them are obvious but there are a few key points I want to emphasize that will help you make...

Comparing Applications

Every time a new version Aperture or LightRoom gets released/announced you always have a big flurry of 'which application should I choose?' posts on all the digital photography forums, and the release of the LR2 beta has been no exception.
I'm recording a Lynda.com Aperture title this week, and I thought it would be fun to include your favorite Aperture 2.1 tip. I'll even give you credit :) Check out the details in this post.

Anatomy of an Interface

Aperture has a very ‘particular’ interface. We all know by now about doing colour corrections against a neutral background, in fact most books on digital colour always recommended setting your desktop picture to a mid-grey. But is there more to...
Apple has opened the door to third party image editing tools for Aperture 2.1 by launching "Edit API." And to show you how powerful this feature is, they've included the first plug-in, "Dodge and Burn," with the version 2.1 download - for free. And there's lots more to come, and soon.
The ability to create your own set of default bricks in the Adjust tab has been one of Aperture's most requested features. Apple has answered the call in version 2.1 by allowing you to decide which bricks load by default...
I probably don't have to spend much time on this, but thought I should mention it anyway. If you've already used up your 30-day trial period with Aperture 2.0, you won't be able to test drive version 2.1. Apple considers...

Hidden Gems

Aperture is a comparatively ‘deep’ program - there are lots of things you can do in it, and there are often multiple ways of achieving an objective. This means that it can take some time to get to grips with Aperture, especially combined with the virtual organisational structure and virtual images. Anyway, to get to the point, that means there are often a lot of little functions (especially keyboard shortcuts, I love keyboard shortcuts...) that people aren’t aware of, a few of which I’ll list here.
I’m finding that Aperture 2 gives a slightly different colorcast to many of my images if I convert them to the 2.0 decode. Often I want to recreate the look they originally had and so I’ve frequently been reaching for...

Update from the Box

Yesterday, while browsing in my local Apple store, I decided to purchase the updated version of Aperture, but instead of purchasing the registration key for the trail version of Aperture 2.0, downloaded from Apple, I decided to purchase the box...

The Aperture (2) World Tour

I just signed up to attend the Aperture World Tour event in San Francisco, CA. I think it's going to be great fun. Hopefully, one of the tour stops will be near you, so you can attend too.
One of my favorite features in Aperture is the ability to generate emails containing selected images containing customized watermarks, with just a single click on the email icon. To set this up, first go to Preferences >Export, choose your mail...

Whither Primary Select?

Apple has made an important interface change in Aperture 2.0, that you may not notice right away: the Primary Select control is gone. In its place is a new control for quickly changing to a Primary Only viewer mode. To understand exactly what this button does, let's re-cap.

Aperture 2: Quick Preview

When you activate the new Quick Preview option, Aperture displays previews much more quickly. In Quick Preview mode, Aperture stops generating new previews and uses whatever JPEG file it can find.
If you haven't soaked up enough Aperture 2.0 yet, go over to Lynda.com and watch 6 free movies on what's new with this upgrade. And yes, one of the freebies is on Quick Preview, and another is on creating your own custom keyboard shortcuts.
Yesterday, I described a lot of the changes in the adjustment tools found in the Adjustment Panel. One key tip that I omitted is that to reset any slider to its default position just double click on the slider. That’s...
