New Raw Support For The Lucky
By lucky, I mean those fortunate souls who are using Nikon's new flagship SLR the D3X. The mega-megapixel camera is now supported by Aperture.
But you may need to upgrade to some of the new Mac's out today which promise to make Aperture even faster. New iMacs, Mini's and MacPros were announced today.
This blog is still up, but recent changes at O'Reilly have meant contributors no longer get a small honorarium for their contributions, thus the tumbleweeds on this site. But Aperture use and interest is stronger than ever, as is the passion for Aperture that the writers of this blog maintain. Hopefully Inside Aperture will thrive again, so check back periodically. There's also a huge archive of information here for Aperture users in the archive worth exploring.
In the meantime, check in @ Aperture Users Network for the latest news on Aperture and stuff of interest to photographers who use it.

Thanks for the comment Steve. I actually wrote in a comment here a few weeks ago asking what was happening with this blog after the announcement that O'Reilly was dropping the Digital Media division. It's really refreshing to get an honest comment on what's happening. I really hope the blog picks up again.
Last month I started to write in my blog about how I use Aperture myself and found that writing about it is a lot of fun and makes me think about new ways of doing things.
Anyway, I admire your photographic work and enjoy your contributions to TWIP.
Cheers,
Gabe
I am disappointed that the blog entries have nearly stopped. When I got started using Aperture, this site helped me get up to speed. The support provided here is one of the reasons I have decided to stay with Aperture.
I appreciate you letting us know what is happening and hope you will continue to post.
Glad to hear from you. I am purchasing the new 24" iMac specifically to enhance my use of Aperture which I love. Hope to see this sight revitalized soon as I check in daily.
this is one of the blogs on my daily read list...the absence of anything here for a while, along with the deafening silence from Cupertino (WHAT happened to Joe Shorr?)..is disappointing. Ap is such a great package - I hope I can afford to stay with it...I really don't wanna climb another learning curve for LR...but I am afraid that the "iconsumer" products are where its at with Apple nowadays...a product as sophisticated as Ap needs development focus and energy to stay relevant...
Thanks for letting us know about part of the mystery, Steve.
I have no doubt that Aperture will be around for a very long time and i'm excited about what's to come. Like you, I have embraced Aperture and have no interest in going anywhere else. I suspect that many of the innovations in iPhoto come from the Aperture side and vice versa. Aperture is in a very good place now, and we know as software evolves, it gets better. So I keep shooting and trying to learn and grow as a photographer with Aperture at my side. Eventually, when they're ready, we'll see what the next generation of Aperture will have up it's sleeve.
sRaw support? Apple? WHEN??!!
I too noted the long interval, and tried asking O'Reilly whether this had too gone by the boards. Good to hear from Steve!! Given that there is no easy way to "port out" your processed raws (tell me if otherwise), I am getting nervous about continuing to use Aperture. The more I continue to use it, the more work to "get out" if orphaned. I am giving some serious thought to just using PS/Bridge or Lightroom, as I don't doubt they'll stay on the scene- and not because Adobe is devoted, but because they have a larger user base. Loyalty means zip today, as corporate needs refocus even more tightly on the bottom line and restructuring.
O'Reilly did a big housecleaning in early 2009 which included many layoffs, including posts from Aperture user Derrick Story. Lots of blogging and podcasts stopped as a result.
Good to see Steve is still here.
Apple really should have had an update for PMA -- one that includes iPhoto's Places/Faces technology is a given, and quickly bringing the app up to snuff with local RAW adjustments is a MUST or sales will deflate even faster compared to LR. (Roundtripping via expensive plugins is no match for built-in selective changes.)
too bad this blog has gone, or is going... I really liked it.
Aperture professional network otoh, I find extremely annoying and slow to read and navigate.
Many of the excellent aperture resources have come and gone and sadly, I think it is a sign on the wall for Aperture.
Given the economic situation and the extremely small userbase, I can't blame apple that aperture is not any kind of priority.
am i to assume that this blog/site/etc has been killed off ???
Something I will hate to see happen but unless Apple gives some sort of indication about its development plans for Aperture (or even its successor!), more and more people will see the current absence of any development at all as a sign that the application and its concept has been abandoned.
Aperture resources seem to be drying up (Like this blog?) and more and more people are experimenting with Lightroom or going back to PS. For Nikon users there is even a renewed interest in Capture NX2 together with Nik plug-ins.
The loss of Apple's first serious app in this field would be a great pity as it has so much potential. It will also leave a sour note in the current user base and that much more difficult for Apple should they ever attempt another move into the serious DAM field.
I hope this blog comes back, I tried Lightroom and it has about 3 things i like over APERTURE but that is it, everything else is back on the MAC for me.
With rumours of Aperture X or 3.0 whatever now starting again lets hope this is going to start the info flow again.
Lightroom has released nothing for 2 years either and now they came back with version 3 looks just like version 2 with some nice sharpening a new web module, great and how much do i need to spend to upgrade ??
My thoughts are they dont have the creative spirit in Apple and are releasing a beta ahead of Apple but in reality waiting to see the new awesome creative items contained in APerture X and then will rewrite their application.
It happened last time it will happen again.
So come on rally and reilly the troops around Apple, they invent not copy I agree they need to market their secrets a little better and there was the Amazon page mess up announcing in May 2010 a new book which tells me in the New Year we shall see a new copy of Aperture.
These are awesome cameras that will surely work well with Macs of any size. I run a cheap auto insurance quotes business and I always need a very good camera. Its amazing how many people file claims.
I love this camera and I like to use Aperture software. I run a brazil butt lift surgery clinic and I always have to take pictures of my clients. They love to see before and after shots.
Yes I am a big fan of this line of cameras also. I work for cardiff letting agents and I always have to take tons of pictures. Its a real asset to have something that works so well.
I have one myself, used it to take a few photos for Car Insurance Q&A
