New and improved iLife Media Browser good for Aperture users

It was somewhat unexpected but Apple released on Monday (January 26, 2009) a 2.66MB update to its iLife Media Browser. The media browser is the "link" that allows different iLife apps to easily and conveniently access media such as photos, among others.

As usual, Apple's description of the update has been terse. The "update improves overall stability and addresses a number of minor issues." No further information was provided.

This update has been sandwiched in between the official availability of iLife '09 and iWork '09. But according to Apple, other than users of iLife '08, iWork '08, and Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard and above, this is recommended to Aperture users.

This free update is available via software update or it can be downloaded from Apple's website.

Having just installed iLife '09, I'm somewhat disappointed I cannot find a way to copy images from Aperture into iPhoto and preserve keywords and ratings.

For example, I want to copy all of the family photos from my Aperture library into iPhoto for my wife to use (Aperture is too complex for her needs). Either dragging photos from Aperture to iPhoto or using the Show Aperture Library pane in iPhoto yields images in iPhoto that are stripped of all the keywords and ratings I've applied.

Is there a way to get iPhoto and Aperture to play well together?

if you use the Import option (cmnd+i) in Aperture and choose your pictures through those means, all of your metadata will go with it. Dragging and dropping with the iPhoto browser does not pull the metadata. hope this helps!

Your suggestion sounds like it's for importing into Aperture. I'm trying to go the other way, importing into iPhoto from Aperture.

Hi Inside Aperture guys... old news, but it just hit me that with the announcement a few days ago that Oreilly's Digital Media department disappeared I'm not sure what'll happen to this blog.

I sincerely hope it doesn't go away as I enjoy it very much and I'm sure many of the other readers do as well.

Sorry to post this here, but I emailed Oreilly and haven't received a response. Can you let us know what's happening?

Thanks,
Gabe

I think the new iPhoto '09 is now preserving keywords but unfortunately still not preserving ratings.

I tried moving a bunch of projects from Aperture 2 to iPhoto 09 and I was surprised to see that the keywords were preserved. As far as I know this did not work in iPhoto '08, correct?
