The Great Migration: D700 Files

From the comments on the Raw Update Post:

“This was good news! I did note a problem though. I had imported my RAW files into Aperture prior to the update. I thought that having loaded the RAW update Aperture would read these files. Nope! I had to delete all my D700 RAW files from my referenced Aperture library and re-import. Once I did this there was no problem in reading the files.”

I had the same problem as Nick. I imported a bunch of files while I was shooting the Democratic National Convention a couple of weeks ago. The D700 files lived inside my Aperture Managed Library, but even after the update, the previews were tiny and the images didn’t show all the exif metadata.

Nick's solution does work. But there is an easier way.

First I needed to gather all my D700 files from a library that contained D3 files as well. I did a search for all my D700 files. Because the camera model (D700) didn’t show up in the metadata, I narrowed my search looking for "all files" where there was "nothing" next to “Camera Model"

In seconds, Aperture found the more than 900 images. I selected them all, went to “Migrate Image” under the File menu, and in just a couple of minutes, all were updated with all metadata and big previews.

So if you’ve got files stored in Aperture that are yet to be supported by the operating system, remember "Migrate Image", under the "File Menu" for when support arrives.

Kinda wish I knew this earlier.

I have an E-420. I had previously only imported m JPEG files, and kept the RAW files in a folder outside of Aperture.

I had made adjustments to those JPEGs and made galleries and such in Aperture.

Now that Aperture supports E-420 RAW, I will import them. But I'll have to repeat any edits/ratings/sorting that I made to the JPEGs.

If I had imported all originally, and edited the JPEGs, would those edits automatically transfer to the RAW file? Are your D700 edits preserved?

Thanks for that Steve, great stuff! I have a large number of files taken on the D700 that I have not yet deleted/re-imported. So here goes, my "Migrate Image" finger is twitching! Elegant!

Thanks again.

This is funny. We complaint that Apple took long tie to support the D700, but it was only yesterday, two days after Apple released its support for the D700, that Adobe released the support for the D700 with their new ACR.

That is not to say I wish it would be faster, but I though it was an interesting point.

Yes, but Adobe did make a song and dance about supporting D700 almost immediately. They did but did not mention too loudly it was a Beta Raw converter!
