Exporting Time Saver

Exporting large amounts of files to multiple folders can be time consuming in Aperture. But I just realized that you can actually export more than one folder at a time. For instance, in my case, I typically have 8-10 smart albums of images for a wedding project. I use smart albums to collect all my photos based on particular keywords, such "bride and groom" "portraits", and "first dance" images. I export the contents of these albums to individual folders with a corresponding name of each album.

I would have to wait until all the files from one album were exported before I started the next export. But I recently realized that I can set up all the albums for export and let Aperture handle the job. Because exporting takes place in the background, after I set up and execute one export, I realized that I can move on to additional albums and start the process for each of them. Each exporting job appears in the Activity window which can be accessed by clicking Window>Show Activity in Aperture's menu bar, or by clicking the Activity button in the tool bar. If this multiple export function was present in the 1.0 version, it got passed me.

There's is one caveat to this process however that you might have guessed already. When more than one export is taking place, it slows down the process. But theoretically, you could simply allow this process to take place in the background, say over night if you have a huge amount of files to export. Or you can simply click the Pause Task/Resume Task button on the bottom left of the Activity window. Either way, this little function means that you don't have to babysit the process.

Yea this is my favorite new 2.0 feature.

I have a lot of categories on my website so when I want to export new images to the right folder (I use JAlbum to make my website) I can now do it much more quickly then in 1.x .
I simply set my browser to List view, and make sure that it shows keywords, and then sort by keywords. I then simply select groups of images with the same keyword (I have a certain group of keywords that represent a category on my website) and export them to the right folder and go to the next group and so on.. In 1.x I had to wait after each group, which would sometimes be 1-3 images, and sometimes 20.. so it was quite unpredictable when it would be done exporting and therefore took a lot more time to do.

so.. thanks apple-aperture-development-team (and 1.x users that have complained about the lack of this feature) :)

I agree, this feature is a great time saver. I'm new to aperture, but was very happy to see that I can batch multiple export processes and come back later. I think this works for export plugins (like the flickr one) as well.

Is there a way to force Aperture to "serialize" the jobs? I love the ability to submit them, but I'd like to have them run "back to back" rather than at the same time.
