Copyright Preference

There are a lot of great and powerful preferences to be set in Aperture, but here’s a little tip to help insure the security of your images posted in webpages and webjournals you create.

In the Preferences "Export" setting, you can set your default external editor, file format and size, mail program and default size of the images you email with Aperture. Any of all of these settings can be changed at any time.

But there is also a web copyright box that lets you set the copyright information for web pages and journals you create. Of course it’s smart to actually register your images with the Copyright office, which will help you get monetary compensation should someone infringe on your copyright.

The Editorial Photographers website has some great information for those interested in registering their images with the copyright office.

Good suggestion, Steve. Thanks.

Since you bring the topic of 'copyright' up, I have a question. Scanning my preferences, I did notice the above entry, but when I look at an image I have exported (using "File Info..." in Photoshop CS3 Extended), I see "2008 by William H. Booz" next to 'Copyright Notice' under Description and IPTC Status categories. Turns out, that is the way I entered copyright info in "Copyright Notice" entry in 'IPTC - Basic' data when I imported the image from my camera card and NOT how I entered the info in the Preferences/Export panel. Hmmm? Where should the latter appear when one views exported image outside Aperture, Steve?

Steve, another question about copyright info entry in Aperture. When I import new images from my camera card and type a "2" in 'Copyright Notice' field under "Add Metadata From:" section, Aperture remembers an earlier entry and populates the field. Unfortunately, it has a bad memory and always populates the field with "2006...." and I want, naturally, now to use 2008. Do you know where this information "lives" that I could edit it or remove it?

Thanks to you or anyone who can point me to the place!

You can edit the iptcProperties.CopyrightNotice Key in ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Metadata Presets.plist

It's easier than that! Just look under the Metadata menu, and select "Edit AutoFill List" then delete the old dates.

Thank you both, Davids!! The 'Edit AutoFill List' link was just the ticket. I'm set.

Thanks, Steve, for bringing up the topic so I could pose a question I have had for months!

Bill

Yes, I see you can use the Edit AutoFill List in this case. I know that in the past where I have added a custom metadata field in Aperture that I could not edit the autofill list from that menu and had to resort to the .plist edit.

Glad you got it sorted though!
