Apple updates Aperture to v.2.1.1
Aperture is now version 2.1.1. Apple released the update yesterday.
One of the most noticeable changes in the interface is the appearance of the cloud logo and the name "MobileMe Gallery" section in the project panel for galleries that were previously published to .Mac and maintained online through Aperture. Each published gallery also displays the same cloud logo but with the addition of an illustrated sunflower inside the icon. Likewise, publishing an album is now called "MobileMe Album." And in addition, the software's Preference pane now displays a MobileMe section represented also by the cloud icon.
Apple says that the updated version "supports general compatibility issues, improved overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues." This is free 48 MB update but may require the serial number of the original 2.0 version.

No Nikon D700 RAW support :(
Adobe also released Lightroom 2 that will work with the Nikon D700. As an Aperture user I understand why you wouldn't necessarily switch to Lightroom but along with Lightroom 2 Adobe updated the raw to DNG converter to version 4.5 that allows you to convert Nikon D700 RAW files to Adobe DNG files that Aperture will read. Not a direct import but not much work either and it is free. adobe.com/dng
Thanks for the warning Dominique - I will now avoid the update. .Mac was wonderful. Everything about Mobile Me is so tacky, so WIndows XP - the last thing I want to do is to screw up the tasteful Aperture interface with the cloud logo - it has taken me hours to revert all my logos across the Mac to the old versions.
How could Apple fall down so badly?
Firstly, wow NIck, obsessed much? I don't like the mobileme name or icon much myself, but that's a lot of work to put in that might be undone with a future OS update. Whatever makes you happy...
On the release fixing problems, I think it actually made one for me. I started my first Aperture photo book a few days ago, and I thought I had the hang of it. The controls are pretty much like those in Pages, which I had used previously for an extensive portfolio layout. After installing the 2.1.1 release last night, I don't seem to be able to add any new photo boxes, text boxes, or move objects over or under each other, even on custom layouts where that's all I did to begin with. I only seem to be able to choose from one of the default page layouts in whatever book type I chose.
Is this some setting that inadvertently got changed, or is this an issue with the release? I'm in a hurry to get this done, so some pointed advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Aperture continues to lock up on me and crashes with this version. This started on the last update. In my opinion, Aperture needs some serious infrastructure work.
Steven, how much free remaining space do you have on your main drive?
After upgrading to 2.1.1, I am no longer able to use the "Set Compare Item" command from either the keyboard or menu. I have used this tool in my workflow since 1.5, and REALLY miss having it...I would not advise upgrading with this release in its current state.
Greg: I'm confused. Did you say that DNG 4.5 is no longer Aperture readable?
Daniel,
Not obsesessed, just tidy and professional. At the level of work I do, I have no wish to have Barbie icons dotted all over my screen, particulalry when i am presenting to audiences.
Even my 9 year old daughter commented that it looked like a poorly designed sweet wrapper (candy bar).
This and the fact that half of .Mac still does not work has prevented me from buying the iPhone I so much want.
Ah well Lightroom 2 is now out....;-)

Well, it wouldn't have, would it? New-camera-compatibility comes in standalone updates - not bundled with Aperture. (At least, that's been the case recently...) eg:
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.0
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.1
In general, see here for all Apple downloads...
The Set Compare Item is still there! But you have to be in Compare Mode to use it. So just pressing Option-O puts you into Compare Mode and everything is just as it was - return key sets Compare Item, arrow keys move you along.
Great thing is, I no longer accidentally hit the return key anymore and throw myself into Compare Mode.
What happened to my badges and stars in the filmstrip! I want them back! I need them back!
Drew, my badges and stars in filmstrip are still there, even in full-frame mode.
Anybody know if the Web Galleries still spontaneously self-destruct and disappear without warning?
I'm with Nick on this. The Mobile Me branding — everything from the name to the icons — is tacky and looks like it came straight out of Microsoft. I didn't think Apple could come up with a worse icon than the standard Mobile Me cloud atrocity, but that horrid sunflower variant used in Aperture proves me wrong.
I fear that Apple is being ruined by the influx of Windows programming "talent" being brought in to ensure that the iPhone works cross-platform. This same thing happened to Adobe, and unfortunately once the disease gets a foothold, there's no reversing the damage.
I know in my heart of hearts that if Mobile Me had been Mac-only, the rollout would have been seamless. Instead it's been an unmitigated disaster and I — a .Mac user from the beginning — am considering dropping the service entirely.
I don't trust Apple anymore. It bums me out to say that, but it's true.
Sorry, I still can't get Set Compare to work here...I saw that the Compare Mode pull-down menu works on the control bar still works, but when I hit "option-O", nothing happens but a beep...maybe it only happens with dual display setups? I'd like to be optimistic, but so far, can't make it work..
I too just upgraded and am now having a terrible time with black previews. When working in either the window or full screen when I adjust levels or use the retouch tool, the image will suddenly go blank. Black where the pic should be.
I've tried rebuilding the database (took all night), toggling on-screen proofing and preview generation, and the only thing that seems to work is restarting the Application.
This is happening every 4 or 5th image I try to edit.
BTW - I've got 17 gigs open on my dedicated aperture library hard drive.
Don't upgrade.
Here's a thought - the D700 uses the same chip as the D3 - so wouldn't the RAW files be the same? Can someone confirm if this works? It should
@Dominique
I made a post here about 24 hours ago which was referred to an admin for clearance (in case the several links in my post were spam, which they weren't). A day later and the post still hasn't appeared - maybe you should gently prod whoever is responsible? :-)
Gary, your post has just been published.
Hi Dominique.
In regards to your questions about free space on my main hard drive - it varies as I am trying to consolidate my different Aperture libraries. I am now trying to run them from a 4TB Drobo unit, which is only about half full.
Something everyone seems to be missing with this update:
- The export bug that would change any dpi setting to 72 (when metadata is embedded) has been corrected. You can now export images at 250 dpi, for example, and they will export with metadata and dpi intact and correct.
I might be the only one happy about this, but I'm glad it got into this update.
It's easy to miss details about changes and fixes included in updates when Apple refuses to give us any information whatsoever about anything. I'm getting freaking fed up with these guys. I need to know if they intend to ever support the Foveon. They won't say. What's fixed? Do Web Galleries still self-destruct? Will I still get black/red/blue/images when I make adjustment? What's going on? What's coming? Should I wait? Switch to something else? Their refusal to communicate is infuriating.
I have to say, having been plagued tonight by images turning white and gray and black and red while making adjustments, that I'm a bit offended that the Aperture team spent time rebranding icons for Mobile Me, while this several-years-old bug is still around. Why is this so hard to resolve? No professional app should behave so poorly. I was actually trying to show a friend how cool Aperture was, and it turned out to be a big embarrassment because I kept having to quit and restart Aperture. How does Apple demo this app?
Look, I'm not one of those guys who's going to go around threatening to switch to Lightroom. I already have Lightroom. Insomuch as it's really just Camera Raw, it works fine, because Camera Raw is very good, but I find the Lightroom GUI to be clunky, inflexible, clumsy and childish. I want to be using Aperture. But let me just say that Lightroom has never once prevented me from seeing an image as I was working on it. It never blanks out, forcing me to restart it. It may be a GUI goofball, but it pretty much always works.
Getting really fed up over here.
And by the way, the captcha system here is buggy and lame.
