More on "Hidden" Layout Tool in Aperture
Since I've learned about the power of the custom layout option in the book-making tool during a conversation with Joe Schorr, I've continued to play with it. I got to dig in even deeper last week while recording Aperture Essential Training at Lynda.com. I have to say, this aspect of Aperture 2.1 floors me.
You can create just about anything: a custom book (that you print yourself), a poster, menus, slideshow titles... whatever you can think of. I wrote up the step-by-step on The Digital Story titled, Aperture as a Layout Program. If you haven't played with this corner of the Aperture universe, I encourage you to do so. It's impressive.

I've been using it to create CD cover/inserts. It's awesome.
I didn't even think about CD inserts. Very nice. You could have an ongoing project open that had all of your inserts, and just keep adding to it. Thanks for piling on.
Is it possible to export/share custom layouts for Aperture album layouts?
It's actually very, very easy to share Aperture book layouts. They are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes. I've created a sample CD insert (12.4cm square) layout and uploaded it to rapidshare:

Simply unzip and place the resulting CD Insert folder in the Book Themes folder. If the Book Themes folder doesn't exist, create it.
