Inside Aperture

April 2008 Archives

The Aperture Adjustments sliders give you a wide range of control for fixing most images well within the range of the slider. It doesn’t happen very often, but there are times when you’ve moved the slider to the far left...

Stacks and Filtering

Although Aperture has offered stacks all along, it’s a feature that I personally haven’t used a lot. But last week I was doing a lot of spring flower photography and experimenting with narrow depth of fields. In some cases I...
While a lot of interest and excitement is now focused on the awesome capabilities of new editing plug-ins for Aperture, particularly with the recent introduction of Apple's Dodge & Burn, DFT's Power Stroke, Ozone and Lights!, as well as...

Anatomy of an Interface

Aperture has a very ‘particular’ interface. We all know by now about doing colour corrections against a neutral background, in fact most books on digital colour always recommended setting your desktop picture to a mid-grey. But is there more to...

New Views

This past week and a half has been a blur. I am finally settled into my new apartment in Baltimore and just beginning to be able to relax. Between shipping our dogs and all of our belongings, traveling up...
I wanted to demonstrate some different flash effects in the class I teach, bounce, direct, off-camera, side light, scary light from below, etc., and I planned to photograph a student and import the images into Aperture to talk about the...

Lift and Stamp Tip

It's funny how when you don't use a tool for a while, you forget about certain features. In this case, I'm talking about Lifting and Stamping a specific change. For those of you who haven't used the Lift and Stamp...
Apple has made available via the Apple Developer Connection site the Aperture 2.1 SDK. You'll need your ADC login info to grab the 596 kb disk image. But once you have it, you can use it to develop Export and Edit plug-ins. The download includes documentation to help you get off to a fast start.
There are numerous 3rd-party export plug-ins for Aperture that you can try. A lot of them are free, but many are available as 15-day trial demos. There are also trial versions that are available for longer periods of time, but...

A bumper crop of plug-ins

A quick look at the new crop of plug-ins that came out at the end of last week. First up is the Tiffen Filters plug-in. make sure you take a close look at the URL in that link. Yes, I...

Aperture Loves Keynote

Further to Ellen’s post, in the past I've used Keynote for all my presentations, but as you may have read from previous posts, I’m really digging Aperture as a presentation tool. I’m visiting a bunch of Photography Schools across the...
Last weekend I presented at the Niagara Frontier Regional Camera Council. The opening part of my session was a 10 minute slideshow. Creating a ten minute slideshow of some of my favorite images is not usually a daunting task, and...
I finally got the chance to update and migrate all my photo libraries to the latest version of Aperture. Along the way, I was able to review some of the images I edited using an earlier version. One particular image...
I've been testing a Drobo for network backups. I like the little robotic array, but darn, wouldn't it be cool to use it with Aperture too?
Yeah, sounds promising as a blog post for mere mortals, doesn't it? ;-) However, it's been interesting observing how Aperture's database structure has evolved from version 1.5 to 2. Oh, and I've been playing with the new Preview fingerprinting stuff...

Moving Forward

Next week I will be leaving this glorious tiny island that has been my home for the past two years. On Wednesday I fly to Miami where I will pick up my two “Coconut Beach Retrievers” and drive them,...
Are we entering a new era in photography? I’ve been using a loaner Nikon D3 and its ability to render reality in low light/high ISO situations is, in my opinion, extraordinary. It is simply the best camera I have ever...
Although the concept of editing an image stored in Aperture with an external editor has been around since version 1, I've received a few questions lately on the topic and want to take some time to review working with your...
Like a lot of photographers, i find myself using both the pro-level Aperture and the consumer-level iPhoto. I find that there are things I can do best for my pictures in each. Both are truly useful to me in my...
I can't resist any longer. I've tried not to write about connecting my iPhone to the MacBook Pro and shooting tethered images controlled by Aperture 2, but I can't stop myself. It's just plain fun. And it makes a good party trick too (some clue about the parties I attend). All you need is your iPhone, USB cable, and Aperture -- the rest is easy.

On Wednesday the week before last I went to the Apple Pro Seminar day in London, which is sort of the equivalent of the US Aperture World Tour. Rather than three hours of dedicated Aperture stuff it’s an entire day devoted to the Pro apps, OS-level features and to a lesser extent iLife.
I learned a lesson the hard way about setting up slideshow presets in Aperture. But thankfully there is a solution to pass along here. I was making a presentation as part of Aperture’s Education Tour, which makes its way to...
Often times when I create image projects in Photoshop or InDesign, I import them into Aperture simply because I can manage and access image projects using the media pane in Apple's creative suite of applications like Keynote, iDVD, Pages, and...
I've observed that many photographers, for the longest time, use physical notebooks or journals to write down, keep notes and organize records about their pictorials. I've seen, for example, a lot of photographers use Moleskine for this purpose. Photographers carry...
The first plugin for Aperture was released in the v2.1 update last week. Apple developed it to augment the regular adjustment tools. To access it go to Images > Edit With and choose Dodge and Burn. IMHO, that’s not the...
