A Study in Contrasts

I got out on a little drive today, and saw some of the beauty that Hobart has to offer. In about a half an hour, you can be at the top of Mt. Wellington, where you can channel your inner Shackleton. The windward side of these rocks was covered in ice, which I found to be quite beautiful.
A short drive from that frozen landscape is the lush greenery of Hobart harbor. This photo shows the Hobart bridge as seen from near the Botanical Gardens.

Peter, Mikkel, Katrin, and all, I'm so looking forward to following your adventure in Tasmania. Peter, that shot of the icy rocks is amazing. I don't know if I have an inner Shackleton (and I might have to bludgeon him into submission if I did), but I'm glad you get such a fantastic opportunity to tap into yours.
My best regards to everyone who knows me. I'm looking forward to learning more about all the APLA photographers I haven't met.
Safe journey,
Joan
Mount Wellington is awesome how it looms over the city. It also stops most of the rain falling on Hobart itself.
When I was young (back in 2003) I rode to the top of Mt. Wellington and found it covered in snow too. It was amazing that I was hot in the city centre but felt like the antartic atop the mountain. It sure was fun riding down and trying to not run off the edge.
Good times ! Really enjoying remembering those times with all the photos.

You really wouldn't want to come off the bike riding down Mt Wellington. It is steep.
I have been there twice. The first time, we drove into pea soup fog about 100m from the top and could see nothing but an eerie landscape. The other time was bright sunshine, but the top was a good 10 degrees C cooler than the foot.
