Our Itinerary in Tasmania
A few weeks ago I took a Qantas flight from San Francisco to Sydney to check out the locations for our adventure. I’ve never been to Australia before and frankly I dreaded the long flight. It turns out my fears were overblown. The flight from San Francisco to Sydney took just over 13 hours, about the same time it takes to get to Europe, but with only a 5-hour time difference instead of 9. Ok, it was still a long flight, but nothing like I imagined.
I had a several hour layover in Sydney and was met at the airport by Robert Edwards, one of the 6 Australian photographers who will join us on the adventure. He took me to the Sydney Concert Hall for lunch where we met Marcus Bell, another adventure photographer. I’d heard of the Australian hospitality, but both Robert and Marcus confirmed it. Great guys!
Anyway, the hospitality didn’t stop in Sydney. In Hobart I was met by Joshua Iles of Tourism Tasmania. We spent the next week putting 1,700 kilometers on his car as we explored the island and set up shooting locations for the adventure. We ended up defining 3 “zones” that we'd cover.
Zone 1= Hobart and vicinity, including the southwest wilderness area, the Tasmin Peninsula, Mt. Field, Huon Valley, and Bruny Island.
Zone 2= Freycinet and vicinity. (We’ll be based in Bicheno at the Diamond Island Resort from where we can explore Maria Island, Freycinet National Park, Douglas Apsley Park, and the rest of the northeast coast with the possibility of visiting Flinders Island.)
Zone 3= Cradle Mountain and vicinity. (We’ll based at Cradle Mountain Chateau from where we can explore the northwest coast from Launceston to Stanley, including Sheffield and Deloraine.)
